This pearl-laden bracelet translates a mid-15th–century French cluster jewel in the Museum’s holdings. Made of gold, pearl, and emerald with the word “amor” (Latin for “love”) suspended in delicate letters along the base, this exquisite adornment may have been worn as either a pendant or a brooch. Some portraits of young women also depict similar pieces exhibited in their hair, or at the shoulder or neck. Such luxurious creations played an important role in betrothal and marriage, serving as magnificent tokens of affection.
