The featured figure is inspired by a beautifully painted angel crafted in Naples, Italy, by Giuseppe Sanmartino (Italian, 1720–1793) during the second half of the 18th century. Each holiday season, The Met presents its Annual Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crèche to showcase the Museum’s collection of Neapolitan angels. A charming 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity scene unfolds beneath the tree, with a host of exquisitely carved and dressed angels hovering in the branches above the Holy Family.
